Now that the configurator is live, I priced out the Colorado I would get, if I didn't wait for the diesel (although, if I get one, I will wait for the diesel). It's a crew cab, long bed LT 4x4, and it priced out at $34,500.
First, let me pick a few nits. I don't care for the swoopy lines of the cab, but I do think GM did a good job deugifying the global version. You know, the one with the bloated Equinox front end. Also, the color choices, why so boring GM? Why can't I have the beautiful Blue Topaz Metallic, like on the Silverado?
One last thing, what is the deal with the shifter? Did you have a bunch of those left over from the Brazada? Was the boat supply house having a big sale? Seriously, it's a pickup truck, put the shifter on the column, where it belongs!
OK, now that that's out of the way, I think the Colorado/Cayon will be a good truck. More than capable for the weekend warriors, or people who want something smaller, but don't want to suffer through another Tacoma of Frontier (I'm not saying those are bad trucks, but dated doesn't begin to describe them). I hope they sell well.
Here's the problem, price. To be fair, I priced a comparable V6 4x4 LT crew cab Silverado, and it stickered a full $7,000 higher. That's a lot of cheddar, but we all know full sized trucks are discounted like crazy. Can I make an argument for paying $7k more, when the Colorado is all I need? No. But what if the real price difference is only a couple grand, after incentives? Sorry, I'll take the full sizer.

I really like these but I don't see the point in buying one as anything other than the base rwd manual 4 cylinder or the diesel crew cab. Anything in between seems like a waste and I agree with you that you'd be better off with a full size.

Price is not everything. A full-sizer would have some difficulty navigating and parking where I live. The MPG difference is on the back of my mind, too. Sure, the Colorado is only 80% of what the Silverado can do but it's more than enough truck for me.

having had a smaller truck, for another couple grand its worth it for the bigger model. When I was looking at Sport Tracs vs F-150 (used) they were pretty close in price. The Sport Trac was a bitch to maneuver. I didn;t really want the bigger truck but there were too many drawbacks for the smaller truck so i bought a WRX. Yes logic prevailed.

I priced out a Colorado and got rather close to 40,000. For that kind of scratch I'd rather pick up a Ram 1500 Outdoorsman.

When I tried to configure mine it just says "see dealer for pricing."

My Sport Trac was unbelievably difficult to park. I bet there isn;t much difference in turning radius vs F-150. A ranger might be another story vs F-150 but I dunno.

The Colorado is anywhere from 8" to over a foot shorter than an F-150. Turning radius is about the same, but that length difference can be a killer.

The configurator just went live yesterday, so you may want to try again.

That certainly makes a difference for some, and I'd include that in the "people who need/want something smaller category". Where I live in the suburbs, it's not really an issue. I rarely go into the city, and when I do, I've always managed to find a spot to parallel park my full size. But if I lived in the city, or went there regularly, that would change things entirely.

The width can make a big difference too, when trying to actually get in or out of the vehicle in a narrow parking spot. That's why my S-10 was perfect, when I was in college.

Chevy's site calls the Colorado a "small pickup/compact truck." A Datsun 620 is a small pickup. This thing is huge.

Yes! Compact it is not. I actually loved the old Colorado, because I thought they nailed the size perfectly. The regular cab was roomy and comfortable, yet the footprint of the truck was still plenty small for an American city. The new one is very much a midsize truck.
